The Hip And The Square

Taken from the name of the short-lived column written by Norman Mailer for the Village Voice.

As someone who has the attention span of a gnat, the hip and the square has remained an unceasing area of interest.

On the surface it’s superficial but on the flipside in our post-modern, ironic age there’s still much to be learned from looking at the value judgements and delving into the processes behind them.

I wrote the above in 2008. Four years later my attention span hasn’t improved but focus has shifted somewhat from the superficial to the increasingly relevant. While the posts will continued to be spattered with my musings on lifestyle and culture the Hip and the Square is now also a repository for my thoughts as I complete my MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Me, me, me

Although my recent achievements include launching a non-profit start-up, of which I was the director, and producing the ITV News website, I remain a hack at heart . I’ve written for publications including The Guardian, The Observer, The New Statesman, Press Gazette, Rolling Stone Italy, The Independent and many more.
