Royal wedding fever hits Notting Hill

Less than 24 hours to go before the wedding that‘s being billed as the biggest royal event in 30 years.

To be honest I’m not that fussed about it but am loving the way everyone is wholeheartedly jumping on the bandwagon.

Notting Hill today is a sea of red, white and blue. I thought I’d share with you a few pictures of shop fronts and street scenes I’ve come across. Tomorrow I’ll be gate-crashing a few royal wedding parties, stay tuned!

Ibiza closing parties 2009 – full list

Ibiza closing parties. The beautiful thing is that at the end of the season workers and holiday makers alike have one week to forget about the horrors that came before and those that await you.

The Ibiza closing parties are an infamous opportunity to dance your troubles away and say goodbye to the summer in style.

Having tired a little of searching out of date listing sites and being attacked by garish Flash-tastic ravers websites that never actually load, I decided to start my own list. It´s a work in progress so if I missed anything or made mistakes please do let me know.

Escape to Puerto Rico, Hunter S Thompson style

It’s the sort of reporting that makes you feel better.  Jason Booth’s almost poetic comentary on a recent trip to Puerto Rico inspired by Hunter S Thompson’s novel The Rum Diaries soothes over you, an effect due as much to its delivery as its content.

Retracing the steps of the fleeing Gonzo journalist, Booth escapes the media hubbub of New York for the white beaches of San Juan but finds that paradise isn’t as perfect as first impressions may seem.

The sense of a need to escape and the desire for adventure seems to have convinced Johnny Depp that the story was worth adapting for the silver screen.

Greenwich by boat

Pop down to the Millenium Pier and use your Oyster card to get a discount on one of the boat services that’ll take you on a scenic route eastwards on Thames.

It takes less than half an hour to get to Greenwich and it’s so much more fun than the tube. Once you’re there I’d recommend taking a peek at the Old Royal Naval College and the Market.

(I do just have to add how much I’m loving the camera on my Samsung phone)

Greenwich Market

Probably the best sweetshop in the world

China’s rich kids

Working on a feature delving into the top ten destinations for young people who don’t yet have the burden of kids, pensions or morthages who are looking to escape the economic doom that’s been forecast for the UK.

The list is still in its embryonic stages – it combines not only great places to live that offer an alternative to the daily grind but also credit-crisis-proof trades and professions (farming, teaching etc).

Stumbled across this piece in Forbes magazine which may just have given me another point to plot on the map:

“People under age 32 are driving sales. It’s shocking to me how few companies actually understand that,” said Shaun Rein, head of China Market Research Group.

Any suggestions jobs in China with long-term prospects?

An African Paradise

Got back from Jinack Island late on Friday night and I have so much I want to write about. The place was amazing!! Slightly tied-up at work but looking forward to publishing my picture gallery of shots I took on the island. It was so beautiful and full of the most unexpected surprises. More to follow!

Hip destination – Buenos Aires

Really getting restless. I need to move – almost to the extent that it feels like I’m going stir crazy in London. My default escape destination is Grenada but I need to go somewhere completely unfamiliar.

The weather in Buenos Aires is currently 31 degrees centigrade. They have tango, great red wine and fascinating architecture… need I say more?

23 March 2009…

Actually, yes, I do feel the need to say more. Not sure that I really did this post justice so here are a few more elements:

HOTELS (as suggested by The Independent)

Five Cool Rooms – Minimalist hotel in the heart of the hip Palermo district

Home – A design-minded hotels in the north of the Palermo Viejo district

Faena Hotel+Universe Alan Faena and designer Philippe Starck in Puerto Madero. Not for shy and retiring types

The Cocker a gorgeously stylish art-nouveau townhouse in San Telmo (my favourite)

AFTER DARK

Read the blog post if you’re looking for something a little bit harder than tango when it comes to music. Learn why BA has earned a reputation as the party capital of the south.

ATMOSPHERE

While a feature in the International Herald Tribune by a writer who moved to BA to find a new life, gives a real insight into life in a city dealing with financial uncertainty.

Off to the manor

Ooh!!! I’m so excited. Me and a big bunch of pals are off to my mate Nick’s birthday celebrations which will last the whole weekend.

The destination is Great Tangley Manor in Surrey (feels like the country but just 35m by train from Londinum). I know I shouldn’t blow my own trumpet but it’s another great find by ME.

I’m so good at finding amazing locations for events it’s ridiculous. Don’t believe me? Send me your requests and I’ll mail you some suggestions for free.

Maybe I should give up journalism and become a location scout. Anyway more to follow on this weekend’s debauchery (if I survive)!
